Program Establishment

The Clinical Pharmacy program at Faculty of Pharmacy, Sohag University, was launched in 2018, and the faculty was approved to award a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy (Clinical Pharmacy) under the credit-hour system.

Program Overview and Importance

  • The program aims to prepare graduates who are well-versed in all the requirements of the pharmacy profession and all modern technologies, in order to produce distinguished pharmacists capable of working in public and private pharmacies, pharmaceutical factories and companies, research laboratories, drug control and food analysis, and in the fields of media, marketing, research, and universities

  • This program highlights the pharmacist’s role in providing appropriate healthcare to patients both inside and outside hospitals. This is achieved through monitoring their treatment regimen, studying pharmacokinetic principles and drug interactions, and their applications in treating various medical conditions to determine appropriate dosages. In this way, the clinical pharmacist plays an active role in the healthcare team of doctors and support staff in order to ensure the optimal choice of medication, determine the appropriate dosage according to each patient’s condition, ensure the proper use of medication, monitor its therapeutic effect, solve drug problems that may occur during use, and provide the necessary drug advice to the healthcare team, the patient, and all components of society
  • The importance of the Clinical Pharmacy program lies in the following:

  1. The scarcity of clinical pharmacists compared to graduates of the general pharmacy program.
  2. The graduates’ suitability to the needs of the job market in Egypt and the Arab world.
  3. The development of university education to keep pace with the latest educational systems globally

  • The Clinical Pharmacy program is a flexible program that suits students’ inclinations and desires, highlights their potential, and aims to graduate a pharmacist who is familiar with all the requirements of the profession, the latest branches of pharmacy science, and all modern technologies, which makes the graduate distinguished and qualifies him/her  to work in public and private pharmacies Pharmaceutical factories and companies, drug control and food analysis laboratories, as well as work in the field of media and pharmaceutical marketing, research centers and universities  
  • What is new in this program is the focus on the role of the pharmacist as an integral member of the healthcare team in providing appropriate healthcare to the patient inside and outside hospitals, through monitoring their medication regimen and studying the principles of clinical pharmacokineticsIn treating various medical conditions and determining appropriate treatment regimens, in collaboration with the treating physician.
  • This aims to maximize the effectiveness of the medication and minimize unwanted side effects by ensuring the safe, effective, and cost-efficient use of drugs, thus providing direct health benefits to patients

Program Admission Requirements:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (science track) and nomination by the University Admissions Coordination Office.
  • Achieving the minimum score for the Pharmacy sector
  • Passing the medical fitness test
  • For international students, according to the conditions set by the General Administration for International Students

Study System

Duration of Study

The program duration is five years, based on the credit-hour system. Each academic year is divided into two semesters, each lasting fifteen weeks. Some courses may also be offered in a summer semester of 6-8 weeks of intensive study.

Instruction at the faculty is in English. However, some courses may be taught in Arabic upon the recommendation of the relevant department and the approval of the faculty council and the university council.

The university council, based on the faculty council’s recommendation, awards a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (Clinical Pharmacy) degree under the credit-hour system.

178 credit hours + 100 hours of clinical training in community pharmacies after the third yea.

  • 660 EGP per hour for students.

  • 20 per hour for international students.

Summer and Clinical Training

The student must complete a practical training period of no less than 200 hours under the supervision of  one of a staff member at a pharmaceutical institution approved by the faculty council, in addition to 100 hours of clinical training at a university hospital.
